Agency

Updated: Jun 20, 2020

Agency is empowering - it means investing in your vision for your voice. When we have agency, we can make our own choices because we are building on intuitive knowledge alongside others’ teachings. It's how Beyoncé achieves her vocal runs, Lizzo belts out, how Billie Eilish conjures her signature sound. They made their own choices.

One of the most important things a singer can have is agency. The ability to improve themselves, to understand their voice and work with it, grow it, develop it into something rich, emotional and (seemingly) intuitive.

Agency means that:

  1. You can sing a new side for an audition with 10 minutes notice

  2. You can sight read during a rehearsal

  3. You can take a note from your producer or director and fix it quickly

  4. You can sing a gig and not lose your voice (even when you're sick)

  5. You can learn something new and retain it for forever

  6. You can see real and lasting change in your voice

One of my goals as a voice teacher is to give you agency. That means that over time you won't feel as reliant on me to help you warmup, work on a song and correct every mistake.

  1. Learn the building blocks to a perfect warmup

  2. Pick music that showcases your voice

  3. Build a repertoire - be it auditions or a gig we'll have your book ready to go

  4. Be able to hear and correct many of your own mistakes

  5. Learn how to notate your songs to increase musicality and artistry

  6. Use old notes, comments and questions to develop a comprehensive understanding of your relationship to various vocal techniques

  7. Build healthy habits for your voice

  8. Develop a routine that includes 10 minutes of voice practice every other day

  9. Sing prepared, confident, safe and joyous - be the singer you've always known you can be!
